HR Health Check

What they said.

Heading into our next phase of growth, I wanted a straight, independent answer on whether our people practices and structure could actually handle scaling up. That’s exactly what Zest gave us. The HR Health Check was pitched right for where we’re at – no bloated enterprise stuff we don’t need, just a clear read on what actually matters. Knowing our compliance foundations were in check took a weight off and let us focus on the bigger stuff: getting our strategy, structure and leadership right. What started as a one-off engagement has turned into an ongoing partnership and Zest genuinely feel like part of the team now.

The Need

Modn, a technology services provider, was entering its next phase of growth. The business had established sound employment foundations, but its Founder and CEO wanted a clear view of whether its people practices, organisational structure and culture were ready to support further scale.

Modn engaged Zest to conduct an independent HR Health Check, identifying any immediate risks while highlighting the strategic people priorities that would have the greatest impact on its future growth.

The Solution

Zest conducted an HR Health Check assessing the organisation across six dimensions. Three dimensions were adapted to reflect Modn’s current size and stage of maturity, ensuring the review remained practical and relevant.

Working closely with the Founder and CEO, we reviewed:

  • Employment systems and processes.
  • HR policies and procedures.
  • Legislative compliance and risk.
  • Organisational structure and role clarity.
  • Leadership accountabilities and interdependencies.
  • Alignment between existing practices and Modn’s desired culture.
  • Strategic people priorities for the next phase of growth.

The review found that Modn had a healthy legislative foundation, with no significant employment risks identified. The greater opportunity was strategic: creating clearer organisational direction and ensuring leaders, structures and people practices were aligned to deliver it.

Highlights

  • A health check tailored to the business: The assessment reflected Modn’s size and stage of growth. This kept the focus on the areas most relevant to the organisation rather than applying unnecessary enterprise-level requirements.
  • Confidence in the foundations: The review confirmed that Modn had a sound legislative base, giving the Founder and CEO confidence that attention could shift from immediate compliance concerns to longer-term organisational effectiveness.
  • A clear pathway forward: The findings provided practical priorities for strengthening strategy, organisational design, leadership accountability and cultural alignment as the business continued to scale.

Challenges

  • Creating greater strategic clarity during a fast-moving phase of growth.
  • Defining the key organisational pillars that would guide future priorities and decisions.
  • Clarifying the role of leaders in translating strategy into action.
  • Ensuring accountabilities and interdependencies remained clear as the organisation evolved.
  • Aligning policies and procedures with the culture Modn wanted to create.

Wins

  • Confirmed a healthy legislative foundation with no significant risks identified.
  • Identified the strategic people priorities required to support continued growth.
  • Established the need for clear strategic pillars
  • Created a pathway to review organisational design, accountabilities and interdependencies.
  • Identified opportunities to refresh policies and procedures to better reflect Modn’s desired culture.
  • Provided the confidence and clarity needed to move from compliance foundations to strategic organisation development.
  • Led to an ongoing retainer partnership supporting organisational design and strategy development.
